In the time it took me to create this painting (3 weeks), 36 lions were killed! 🦁 Approximately 600 lions are killed every year on trophy hunts or as a reaction to protecting livestock. It’s NUTS!! What is wonderful about this commission is that all 3 flowers were lovingly grown by my client in her garden and photographed at different stages of growth throughout the years. I’ve been quiet on here for a while for a couple of reasons. Having had a bit of a social media detox and it has been so wonderful to separate from the anxiety around posting, I’ve ended up detoxing for another month since being home. Also, 2024 has brought round some huge changes in my life, I’m now engaged, a home owner and potentially looking for a more secure job than being an artist. 2023 was the toughest, hard working and most sacrifice making years I’ve ever had. Not sure if that makes sense but to explain…working towards my exhibition I was so driven and determined to fill my show with the most amazing work I could make. I was pushing 8-10 hour days, not giving myself time off for exercise or self love and relying heavily on my other half to cook meals and keep me sane. After the show I was very disheartened and really questioned my place in this art world. 🎨 My favourite painting from this year is this underwater coral and reef fish scene. 🐠🐟 As an artist, I am constantly exploring new themes and subjects to bring to life on canvas, and this piece is particularly special to me. 🌊 The ocean has always been a source of inspiration for me, and I am continually fascinated by the vibrant colours and diverse life it contains. Today I’m starting a new commission, and this is my process. I build all of my canvases from scratch in my studio so the first step is to order the right sized stretcher bars. Once I’ve recievd them I can build the frame by knocking the bars together and stapling in place. Then I measure and stretch the linen over the stretcher frame and secure it into place with staples. Next I seal the linen so that the material does not absorb my paint and finally I paint several layers of white gesso, sanding between each layer until I have a smooth surface. Once all that has been done I am able to start painting my background. The way I’m doing it this year is as follows: 🖌️Print sales are now open and you can order straight from my website. ⏰You have until the 10th December to put in an order...thats less than 1 month only until I close the shop. This gives me time to get them printed, signed, packed and to the post office. 💌All orders will be posted on or before December 18th to receive in time for the holidays. My limited edition prints are becoming even more limited. Last years print I made 50 prints, for this years collection I will only be doing 25. So make sure you order one while they are still available. Further to my post at the beginning of the week, I have the time now to play around with some new ideas that I’ve been stockpiling over the last year or so. Things I’ve wanted to learn, get better at, parts of my practice I want to improve upon. I’ll be taking some courses, sketch booking for the first time ever, and really pushing the boundaries of my practice to question who/what I really am as an artist. I’m excited (and a bit nervous) to start, but I figured there will never be expansion and development without a little experimentation, so I’ll just have to get used to this uncomfortable feeling. 2 month ago I showcased a collection of 23 original paintings at Green & Stone gallery. Although I tried to have no expectations for the week, I ended up being pretty disappointed by my lack of sales. The experience has made me have a seriously hard think about my future as an artist and although I don’t want to give up, I also can’t go through my life not selling anything. It makes me so frustrated to see artists throwing together paintings and selling them consistently for big bucks when here I am slaving over something for months at a time and only selling my cheap ‘last minute’ paintings. Don’t get me wrong, I’d never think that other artists don’t deserve the popularity they’ve accumulated, I just wonder why my work isn’t receiving the same attention. WOW It's been a while since I've posted!! Been taking some much needed time off of social media to just process the week of the exhibition and the 18 months leading up to it. My goodness what a whirlwind and an incredible experience to have had. I'll be posting some memories over the next few days and share some insight into how the week went. Overall, I have to take the whole experience as a serious positive boost to my career. A moment of honesty...I've had a really tough month! On top of the pressure I put on myself to reach my deadlines, I've fallen off my bike which has left an ugly scar on my chin and I've ben accused of plagiarism by an artist who I had looked up to though my developing years as an artist. This journey has been so tough and I have had to sacrifice so much to put this show on. Mainly so much of my time but often my sanity also! But I'm doing what I love and I wouldn't change it for the world. I’ve titled this painting ‘Fahari’ which means Magnificent in Swahili. I have also partnered up with a lovely charity called Safina Lion Conservation Fund who are a small UK based lion conservation charity working with four conservation partners in Kenya & Tanzania to support work to protect and monitor lion populations in the wild. My donation will go towards either the sponsoring of a Lion Guardian, a Massai warrior assigned to a lion for protection or paying for a Boma to be constructed which is a fencing system designed to protect livestock. As I mentioned before, I am doing a workshop for Green & Stone of Chelsea and have been working this week to prepare the canvases my attendees will be working on.
